Private 5G vs Wi-Fi: which does your site need?

Wi-Fi and private 5G solve different problems, and many sites end up using both. This guide compares them on coverage, moving devices, security, cost and staffing, so you can decide which parts of your site need which network.

The short answer

Wi-Fi remains the right choice for offices and general enterprise traffic. Private 5G is built for the devices that move and the areas where a dropped connection stops work: robots, AGVs, scanners and cameras across wide or metal-heavy sites. With autonomous private 5G, that network ships pre-configured, is live in 10 minutes and needs no telecom specialist, and it runs alongside your existing Wi-Fi.

Where Wi-Fi works well

For offices, meeting rooms and general enterprise traffic, Wi-Fi is the right tool. There is no reason to change what already works in those areas.

Where Wi-Fi reaches its limit

The limits show up when devices move and the site is large. Wi-Fi tends to drop connections for moving devices and to leave dead zones in metal-heavy or wide areas. In a warehouse, that hits exactly the devices the operation depends on: scanners, robots and AGVs on the move. Read why warehouse Wi-Fi reaches its limit when the operation starts to move.

Coverage and number of access points

Private 5G covers large areas with far fewer access points. With Edge-20 5G, a single FEM-100 access point covers up to 30,000 sq ft. In one 850,000 sq ft distribution center, 200 Wi-Fi access points were replaced with far fewer CBRS radio units. For wide outdoor and industrial sites, see CompactOne 5G.

Moving devices and handover

Private 5G is built for mobility, so devices keep their connection as they move across the site. Edge-20 5G delivers latency under 20 ms round-trip, suited to AGVs, AMRs and industrial IoT. In the distribution center above, scanner connectivity reached 99.99% reliability and peak picking throughput became 32% faster after the move to private 5G.

Security: SIM-based device authentication

On private 5G, each device authenticates with its own SIM or eSIM instead of a shared password. Access is tied to the device’s identity, so a password that gets passed around or written down never becomes the key to the network.

Cost compared with Wi-Fi

EdgeNectar’s private 5G is priced comparably to Wi-Fi. Measured over the life of the system, Edge-20 5G has up to 30% lower total cost of ownership than enterprise-grade Wi-Fi. For what drives the cost of a private 5G network, see private 5G cost.

Do you need a telecom team?

No. EdgeNectar systems ship pre-configured, are live in 10 minutes and need no telecom specialist to deploy or run. After day one, AIDEN (Artificial Intelligence Delivery Edge Network), EdgeNectar’s patent-protected Edge AI engine, monitors, predicts and corrects the network 24/7. That combination is what makes it autonomous private 5G rather than a network you have to staff.

Running both side by side

For most sites the answer is not either-or. Keep Wi-Fi for offices and general enterprise traffic, and add private 5G for the moving and business-critical devices on the floor. The two run alongside each other, so you can start with the area where dropped connections cost the most. If you are comparing private 5G vendors rather than technologies, see our private 5G vendor comparison.

FAQ

Is private 5G more secure than Wi-Fi?

Private 5G authenticates every device with its own SIM or eSIM instead of a shared password, so network access is tied to the device’s identity rather than to a credential that can be shared or leaked.

Can private 5G replace Wi-Fi?

For moving, business-critical devices it can: one 850,000 sq ft distribution center replaced 200 Wi-Fi access points with far fewer CBRS radio units. For offices and general enterprise traffic, Wi-Fi remains the right choice, so most sites run both side by side.

Is private 5G expensive compared with Wi-Fi?

No. EdgeNectar’s private 5G is priced comparably to Wi-Fi, and Edge-20 5G has 30-50% lower total cost of ownership than enterprise-grade Wi-Fi.
